Week 1 (Wickford CC B 9, KWD D 1) Kingswood fielded a completely new team comprising Marc Lucraft, Sheila White and James Preston. Unfortunately they found it hard going against the Cricketers, as Roger Morris and Tim Campbell clocked hat-tricks. Kings did have one success as Sheila narrowly defeated Darren Batch 11-9 in the final end but Darren and Tim cleaned up in the doubles in four against Sheila and James to round off the evening. (Shell E 8, Canvey B 2) Shell E, unaccustomed to convincing wins, were delighted to record this result at the expense of Canvey B. No sets went past four as Hugh May clocked a hat-trick, and Vaughan Chambers and Robbie Wong won two but both lost to Geoff Banthorpe. The visitors fielded two newcomers to the league James Reardon and Charlie Lamy, who shouldn't be disappointed with their performances on this first occasion. (BDSC 3, Hospital C 7) New signing for the Medics Naga Shankar was the mainstay of this win with a hat-trick although he had to struggle against both Andrew Crocker and Keiran Wood, winning 8 and 9 in the final ends respectively. Keiran was the most successful for BDSC, winning two hard fought contests against Gill Smith (6, 6, 12) and Clive Beauchamp (9, -7, -6, 10, 10). He also assisted in gaining a third point in the doubles for the home team. (Setts 3, Shell D 7) SETTS only providing two players assisted the visitors to their victory, with Brian Billins defeating John Hadley in four and Perry Fung in five. Peter Handscombe added one more point but Hugh May was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet, losing narrowly to Perry -10,9,-9,-9 and John 11-9 in the final end. An easy doubles win for Peter and Brian rounded off the evening for the Oilmen. Week 2 (Canvey B 5, WCC B 5) Geoff Banthorpe writes: Close match, star of the evening was 14 year old Jimmy Reardon who won two matches and only lost in the fifth to hat-trick man Tim Campbell. Our other 14 year ols Charlie Lamy had an exciting game with another youngster Bobby Carey, only losing 10-12 in the fifth. I played the doubles with Mervin Francis and we scraped the win for a draw. (Shell D 10, BDSC 0) The Shell squad of Tony Arthurton, Pete Handscombe and Hugh May were in mean form as they whitewashed the youngsters of the Disabled Club. The only set to go the full distance was Hugh's contest with Kieran Wood, Hugh triumphing 11-6 at the end. Tony and Hugh then ran off the doubles in three against Kieran and Andrew Crocker. (Hospital C 5, Shell E 5) A welcome draw for the Oilmen. In an evenly balanced contest, no player managed a hat-trick. Sid Hills and Mike Drage clocked a brace each for the Medics, and Robbie Wong and Hugh May did likewise for the visitors. With Naga Shankar taking the remaining singles, it needed Robbie and Hugh to overcome Sid and Mike in the doubles in three to square the result. (Kingswood D 3, SETTS 7) The visitors once again could only field two players, but John Hadley and Lou Hopkins proved too experienced for the youthful home squad comprising Marc and Simon Lucraft and Peter Beddings. Just one game was dropped as they won all their singles and also the doubles in three against Marc and Simon. Week 3 |
